THE PICTURE HOUSE FILM EDUCATION INITIATIVES
2007-08
The Picture House brought Journeys in Film to middle school children in neighboring Bronx public schools. Educators and administrators from partnering schools attended a professional development workshop during which they were trained to use film in their classrooms to teach cross cultural understanding and global awareness.
This Picture House initiative was funded entirely by HBO, Inc.
2008-09
The Picture House Filmmaking Workshop brought high school students to the Picture House from Pelham Memorial High School and Edgemont High School to work together on an original film. From core concept, to writing the script, to planning the shoot, to acting, filming and editing, students learned a great deal about filmmaking while successfully collaborating with their peers.
The Picture House Film Literacy Workshop involved classroom teachers, literacy educators, film teaching artists, and high school students from East Harlem, Bronx, Pelham, and Ardsley. Picture House Teaching Artists partnered with senior English classroom teachers to develop film-based lessons that enhanced subject learning and supported curriculum goals while teaching students the elements of film.
The Filmmaking and Film Literacy Workshops were funded by HBO, Inc. and numerous individual donors.
2009-10
This year, the Picture House will continue the Filmmaking and Film Literacy workshops in both New York City and Westchester schools. These programs are made possible by grants from HBO, Inc. and the Matthew S. Hisiger Film Foundation.
New this year is a partnership with the Scarsdale Young Writers Workshop, where the Picture House will run a series of classes using film as a vehicle for encouraging written expression. The Young Writers Workshop (YWW) is an annual event for Scarsdale students in grades 3-5. The Picture House is proud to partner with YWW and to offer writing workshops that allow students to engage with film in new ways.
