So many great films are coming out this fall. We’re seeing releases from some amazing directors we haven’t heard from recently, and the Oscar buzz is starting already! Here are some of the films I am looking forward to seeing.

In September, we will see some great films at both our Bronxville and Pelham theaters. We kick off on September 16 with the hotly anticipated David Bowie doc Moonage Daydream, which is honestly one of the most interesting and clever music docs I have ever seen. No heavy narration — just archival footage that follows Bowie’s rise to fame in the early 70s. Don’t miss this one in Bronxville. There’s also See How They Run (which we luckily got to catch an advance screening of at this year’s Picnic in the Park), a story that follows Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan as a detective duo in 1950s London. At The Picture House Pelham we will see the based-on-a-true-story The Woman King, starring Viola Davis as Agojia, head of an all-female warrior unit which protected the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees, Love & Basketball) this will be an action-packed celebration of strong women.

October kicks off with Cannes Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness from director Ruben Östlund. It’s an absurdist take on the growing financial wealth gap in the world — and everything you would expect from the director who brought us The Square and Force Majeure. The auteur-fest continues with Martin McDonagh’s latest film, The Banshees of Inisherin. The British-Irish writer-director’s first feature since he won an Oscar for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri finds him re-teaming with In Bruges stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in a dark comedy about two friends falling out with each other in a very small town. October ends with the return of the rom-com and as mega stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts team up in Ticket to Paradise, the story of two divorcees who are forced to work together to save their daughter from a potentially bad marriage. 

November will begin with the latest Black Panther movie, Wakanda Forever, which will be the season’s big blockbuster. I’m also looking forward to The Menu, a very dark comedy that takes on elitist foodie culture. Starring the fabulous Anya Taylor-Joy (The Northman, Emma.) and an amazing cast that includes Ralph Fiennes, Nicholas Hoult, John Leguizamo, Janet McTeer, Hong Chau, and Judith Light, this will be November’s must-see for sure. Also in November, we’ll see Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans which is being touted as his version of Roma — a love letter to his childhood.

At all the festivals, the most enthusiastic response has been to Brendan Fraser’s performance in The Whale. If anyone can bring out the most in an actor it would be Darren Aronofsky, who helms the film. He did so with Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler, Natalie Portman in Black Swan, and Jennifer Lawrence in Mother!. This psychological drama follows Fraser as a reclusive English teacher trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter. There’s no release date yet, but we’re expecting it to hit theaters in the next few months.
