At The Picture House, we believe in the power of movies to inspire, enrich, and change lives for the better. Through our film education programs, we aim to provide people across our region with the opportunity to experience the art of cinema in a whole new way. We pride ourselves on being a process-driven, technique-based school, where our learners’ focus is on the craft of acting, directing, cinematography, screenwriting, or editing.
THE LITTLE COMPANY – for preschoolers and children in grades K–2
Our youngest artists explore characters, costumes, and creative play with Picture House teaching artists. Preschool and grades K–2 children are dropped off at The Picture House for an hour of fun. Students will discover acting and storytelling by creating their own storyboards and bringing their stories and existing stories to life! We will also incorporate music and movement. Discover acting and movie making when bringing stories to life! The class incorporates character creations, costumes, music, movement, storyboarding and camera work. The focus of the class is on understanding the technique and craft of acting and filmmaking, while learning to strengthen our own individual artistic voices, enjoying working as a team, and acting out short stories.
THE COMPANY – skills-based collaborative workshops for students in grades 3-12
The Picture House’s innovative, process-driven approach provides training in film acting, screenwriting, and directing. Our instructors, with years of experience as film educators and artists, make The Company a home for young artists who are passionate about the creative process.
For Grades 3-5:

Students use video equipment to make a short film as a class, while focusing on the process and technique of filmmaking. Students explore writing, directing, storyboarding, cinematography, developing their own artistic voice, and gain solid experience working collaboratively.
Acting and Improv

The Company’s younger actors learn the art of creating characters, explore the wonderful world of improvisation, and discover how to bring their imaginations to life through storytelling and acting. Students strengthen their confidence skills, through public speaking, and learn to work collaboratively as a company. Students film and create a short story as a class.
April Spring Break Movie Making Week (grades k – 5)

Join us for an action packed week of Movie Making and Acting! Whether you are a director or an actor we will find a place for you to shine this week. This year we will be animating, acting out scenes, and creating a music video inspired by The Lego Movie! During camp, you will also get to come dressed as one of your favorite action heroes ready to create short scenes and choreographed movement, have a chance to watch The Lego Movie, plus on the last day of camp, we will screen our short animated film and music video inspired by The Lego Movie. Come make a music video with your friends. Whether you are interested in Acting or Directing we have room for you! Act in a Movie (grades K-5)

Jack and the bean stalk is growing in Pelham! We will cast the movie on day one and begin filming for 6 weeks. Learn to develop characters for the screen, work with your friends to tell a story rich with adventure, conflict, and comedy! Enroll Now

Advanced Company for Directors and Actors (by invite only for 5th graders)

Join us for this advanced class. Students will have the maturity and the passion for this program to create short films together as a company. We will focus on the technique of acting, directing, story boarding, and camera skills. Actors and Directors will work separately with different mentors and then collectively as a production company.
Summer Movie Making and Acting Camp! (grades K-5)
$375 per week
Session 1: July 28 – Aug 1st, 9 – 12
Session 2: Aug 4 – Aug 8th, 9-12
The Picture House is thrilled to announce our Summer Intensive Movie Making and Acting Camp. We provide the script with all the twists, turns, and characters. You decide on day one if you want to focus on acting or directing and then off we go for a 5 day journey into the magic of movie making. Friday will be a screening of our short film.
For grades 9–12:
EVENING FILM CLUB
Price: There is no charge for this course. Class is full for 2013-2014 academic year.
Time: Wednesdays 7-9; October–June
Students in grades 9 – 12 who are interested in a deeper involvement with filmmaking can join The Evening Film Club. This dynamic and interactive year long course, presented in partnership with the Mathew S. Hisiger Film Foundation, is held weekly from October–June in The Picture House’s multi-purpose room. Students are immersed in the inner workings of film production as they move through the cycle of writing, casting, directing and producing their original short feature.
Topics/activities covered during the year include:
• Screenwriting for the Short Film
• Fundamentals of Film Production: Producing, Directing, Lighting & Design.
• Functions of various crew positions
• Cinematography, Editing, Sound Design and Visual Effects
• Guest lecturers from industry professionals
• Field trips to film related venues
Policies and Procedures: All Picture House courses and programs are subject to change or cancellation. In the event that The Picture House cancels an event or program, your payment will be refunded. Full payment is required upon registration for a class or workshop. We accept checks and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express). All program registrations are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you are entitled to a refund up to three days prior to the class start date. We are not responsible for providing make-up classes or issuing refunds for programs missed as a result of illness, emergencies, or other events beyond our control. For the safety and enjoyment of all participants, we reserve the right to refuse admission to disruptive students. Classes/workshops may be recorded for archival and/or other media purposes. Such recordings may include pictures of the group or of individuals. Attendance in a class shall be deemed your consent to appear in such programming without compensation of any kind.
